A local favorite, there is no beating the Big Gulch Trail System. “Love love love big gulch trail,” shares Janet Buehler. “One minute you’re in the middle of civilization and the next you’re far far away in a place that could be hundreds of miles away. Just a small sign marks the trailhead across from the fire department. I’ve spent many hours breathing, thinking, singing on that trail!”
Aurora Pedrola agrees: “The Big Gulch Trail System! Wonderful hiking, easy access and beautiful scenery.” Aranka Fruehauf adds that it’s a “great way to connect with nature and dogs are welcome!”
Finally, Jenny Eglian has some second-hand knowledge: “I don’t personally do this but have heard rumors that the gulch offers a phenomenal mountain bike trail system for the hardcore mountain bikers. My brother-in-law is a mountain biker living in Louisville KY and he has heard and biked the trail! Pretty sure it is a favorite activity for many Mukilteoans (is that a word?).”
A top hiking spot, the Japanese Gulch has built a reputation among bikers as well. According to Janet, “Japanese Gulch is widely known by mountain bikers far and wide as one of the best urban rides around!!! Not to be underestimated as bikers come from different states to ride this special trail.”
The first and only off-leash dog park in Mukilteo, Tails & Trails Dog Park is a must for dog owners. Janet describes it as “a meeting place for like-minded dog owners to gather with their four-legged friends.” It is the perfect spot to enjoy the weather, meet new friends, and spend time with your pup.
A must-see for locals and tourists, Lighthouse Park is packed with things to do. Campfires on the beach, a playground, tours of the lighthouse, and so much more make this the ideal place to enjoy a warm summer day in Mukilteo.
Pay tribute to Mukilteo’s founders at the Pioneer Cemetery. “Don’t forget the landmark graveyard,” shares Janet. “Headstones tell the story of our founder’s lives and untimely deaths including the young from influenza and those that built and called Mukilteo (“good camping spot”) their permanent home.”

Time to clean off those clubs! “Our Harbour pointe golf course with its famous signature 10th hole featured in golf digest presents golfers with challenging golf and breathtaking scenery,” says Janet. With programs for all ages and genders, everyone can take advantage of the beauty and fun Harbour Pointe offers.
“Mukilteo has lots of small and big parks, most of them ideal for reading, picnicking and relaxing,” Aranka shares. “One of my favorite is the 92nd street park where kids can play on different play equipment.” If your little one needs to run off some steam, check out 92nd Street Park.
Mukilteo even has spots for divers! “Not well known, but there is a dive site of off “T-Dock” on Front Street,” shares Aranka. Indeed, this spot is a favorite for night and deep divers and offers opportunities for viewing Puget Sound’s water life. For a dive to remember, check out the T-Dock.
“If you don’t feel like hiking, but like to be outside, you can always volunteer at the Mukilteo Community Garden,” shares Aranka. “They grow lots of veggies to support the neighborhood food banks. You can also rent a bed to grow your own organic veggies.” Enjoy nature and help your community flourish at this quaint garden.

When it comes to beaches, Jenny Eglian suggests staying local: “I happen to think one of the best beaches in Snohomish County is right in the MUK,” she shares. “Our beach features built-in fire pits, a fantastic beach side playground, a substantial shelter perfect for parties all year round, boat launch, lighthouse, plus ice cream and fish & chips within walking distance to the beach.” She even shares a special tip: “Bonus, if you’re a resident of Mukilteo you get a free parking pass to the beach park!”
Known as Lighthouse Park, this hangout destination is a local must-see. Here, according to Aranka Fruehauf, “kids can play in the new playgrounds, make campfire on the beach…watch people get married by the beach on the Wedding Circle,” and so much more. She suggests that you “take the Lighthouse Tour, launch your boat and go for salmon fishing or crabbing.”
If you don’t have a boat of your own, you can follow Jenny’s suggestion and “hop on the ferry at sunset. It is a quick ride to Clinton and back.” While you’re on land, check out Clinton Beach. “Clinton also has a nice little beach with toys for those with little ones who choose this inexpensive adventure to do on any given day,” Jenny shares.
Fun in the sun can work up an appetite, so Jenny and Aranka recommend three spots to satisfy any taste buds. “In the summer, I like to grab some fish & chips to go from Ivar’s,” Jenny shares. Aranka seconds Ivar’s and includes Arnies, another great seafood destination. She also recommends topping off the day “with delicious ice cream at Diamond Knot (they have great food and beer too).” It’s a win-win for everyone!
Lighthouse Park is not only great for a beach day, but also hosts awesome community events. For example, Aranka loves “the Farmer’s Market on Wednesday afternoons not just to get fresh produce, but also run into friends and neighbors. I bring my dog Molly to socialize and see her doggie friends too.”
She also highly recommends Mukilteo’s annual Lighthouse Festival. “Of course the summer highlight is the Lighthouse Festival with lots of activities and a grand fireworks on the water.” Janet Buehler seconds this recommendation: “Don’t forget the lighthouse festival!!! The race, the food, the community parties and fireworks!!!!” No matter how you spend your beach day in Mukilteo, you are sure to make lasting memories.

In the fall of 2018, Alaska Airlines will begin offering commercial flights out of Paine Field, which is a huge deal for Mukilteo and its surrounding cities! Alaska Airlines will start by offering 9 flights per day, which the airline estimates will help over a million people drastically shorten their commute times. In early 2018, Alaska Airlines will announce flight schedules and routes, and will being selling tickets. Get the full scoop here!
As far as how this will impact locals, Aranka Fruehauf has some thoughts and insight on this major addition:
“For many years I felt very much against bringing commercial airport to Mukilteo—not to my backyard! Just the thought of it terrified me; what could happen to my little community, home values, to schools and to air quality… those are real issues. But now [that] the fight is over to stop the airport, I have been thinking a lot [about] how it really will affect my personal life and my sweet little community.”
“I have also spoke with several people who [have] lived/or have relatives living close to [a] small airport, [and I think that] bringing a small airport to my community might have benefits. When I travel to west coast cities, I will not need to drive to Seattle (we all know how bad the traffic is regardless the time of the day)—I will save at least 4 hours of driving, not to mention parking cost! I probably should factor in the stress too.”
“I like to think forward… in my opinion the airport, is not going to be a liability, but rather an asset. Just like we used to think that living close to buses and freeways [could be] detrimental for home values… well… I don’t think that way any more… look at the home values located close to train/light rail stations. I’m actually excited that we have so many options of transportation in Mukilteo. The media talks so much about ‘the airport noise and Mukilteo,’ [and] in my opinion the noise might be more noticeable in Lynnwood, Everett and Edmonds than [in] Mukilteo.”

For a one-of-a-kind experience perfect for all ages, Aranka Fruehauf suggests the Future of Flight: “[I] recommend visiting Future of Flight Aviation Center,” she shares. Here “…you can see models of jet engines, design your own airplane and this is where you start the Boeing Factory Tour,” the only opportunity to publicly tour a commercial jet assembly plant in North America.
Aviation and history buffs will love the Historic Flight Foundation! They offer a collection of the most important aircraft from 1927 to 1957, fully restored and airborne. You can experience the roar of a classic engine, watch the restoration process in action, and marvel at the results of innovation from some of the greatest trailblazers.

Give your kids a deeper education at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum. With interactive exhibits featuring a rare collection of authentically restored aircraft, tanks, and other technologies from World War II, your children will get a look into the past and a glimpse what it takes to preserve these artifacts for the future.
For an event everyone will love, Aranka has a recommendation: “Once a year we have Aviation Day,” she shares. “It’s a must-do, especially if you have kids… they can take a flight and meet the pilots, view one-of-a-kind aircraft, and watch flying demonstrations.” This year’s Aviation Day has already passed, but be sure to keep your eyes open for 2018!
Summertime is perfect for air shows, and Mukilteo has some of the best. “The air shows are fantastic to watch,” shares Greg Buehler. “I’m sure that future pilots and engineers have been inspired by witnessing [these exhilarating air show events].” FHCAM’s annual Skyfair is coming this July and will feature vendors, kids activities, and a fantastic flying show at 1:30pm. As a local hub of transit and convenience, Mountlake Terrace is a popular choice for those who want to live in a smaller city that’s still close to Seattle and the Eastside. The Mountlake Terrace Transit Center makes this all possible by connecting local, commuter, and regional busses with passengers.
“Mountlake Terrace has a great transit center!” confirms resident Shelly Katzer. “Mountlake Terrace also offers convenient access to the freeway and commuting to work is easy.”

1. The Transit Center has the capacity for over 1,000 cars.
This include a 5-level parking garage with 900 spaces. Plus, there’s bike lockers and racks available as well! This means 1,000 fewer cars on the streets during rush hour. (Thank you, Transit Center!) Helping 40,000 passengers commute each day is an amazing feat, and as our region grows, the Transit Center will become an even more crucial part of our community.
2. Light Rail is coming to Mountlake Terrace in 2023!
This is a BIG deal for the community. Construction on the new light rail station and route is slated to begin in 2018, and expected to begin servicing the area in 2023. Take a look at this interactive map for a better understanding of the upcoming Link Light Rail expansion!
3. You can take a bus to Downtown Seattle, Everett, and beyond from the Transit Center.
4. DART (Dial-A-Ride-Transportation) offers those with disabilities transportation access.

Nestled between Terrace Park School and the Mountlake Terrace Off-Leash Dog Park, the Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion (5303 228th Street SW, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043) is an incredible multi-purpose facility packed with amenities to take advantage of! When I asked locals what people in MLT like to do for fun, the Recreation Pavilion was at the top of the listl!
“The MLT Pavilion offers great programs for all ages, including a great swimming program,” shares Shelly Katzer. “My kids enjoyed the pre-school programs, before and after school Kids Krew and summer camps.”
This dynamic community center offers so many amenities to the MLT community, and we wanted to share a few of our favorite things about the community center that are not to be missed!

1. The multi-purpose swimming pool.
This warm-water pool not only is home to swimming lessons and a range of classes, but it also includes a lazy river with a current, spray toys, a beach-like entry leisure pool, a therapy pool, handicapped access, a sauna, and more. Plus, you can even rent out the pool for parties!
2. Kids programs, like preschool, before & after school care, and summer camps!
Keeping kids busy is easy with this community center in your city’s backyard! There are 3 preschool options for kids ages 3 to 5, each program providing a unique set of offerings. Kids Krew offers before and after school care for kids ages 5 to 12, and a huge variety of summer camps include themes like swimming, dance, basketball, tennis, and general youth camps.
3. The huge variety of fitness classes and sports leagues.
Whether you’re into something super upbeat (like Turbo kick or Zumba) or something a little more low-key (like yoga and Tai Chi), the recreation pavilion has a large selection to choose from. 4. The MLT Recreation Pavilion is open 7 days a week.
Whether you want a workout before work or the kids need to burn off some energy on a rainy Sunday, the pavilion is open and waiting to be used! Hours include Monday – Thursday 6am – 9:30pm, Friday 6am – 7:15pm, Saturday 7am – 8pm, and Sunday 8:30am – 7pm.

Recommended by locals, the Mountlake Terrace Off-Leash Dog Park is located just northeast of the MLT Recreation Pavilion. Offering just under an acre of space in the shaded woods of Terrace Creek Park, this fenced area is a haven for dogs!
“We love to take our dog Dash for walks and let him run off-leash in the park!” shares resident Shelly Katzer. Dogs can run and play within the double-gate system, and owners are welcome to relax on benches (or run and play, too!). Learn more about the park and read rules for visiting the dog park here.
2. Marina Beach Off-Leash Park
While this park technically isn’t in Mountlake Terrace, it is in the neighboring city of Edmonds (498 Admiral Way Edmonds WA 98020) and well worth the short 10-20 minute drive from MLT. As part of the larger Marina Beach Park on the Edmonds waterfront, this park offers a long list of amenities in addition to the off-leash area. A loop trail, playground, restroom, picnic tables, barbecue area, and much more set the scene.

Located in the Cedar Plaza Shopping Center (22803 44th Ave. West Suite E-5 Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043), Pet Adventure Shop is a must-visit destination for local pet owners! Established in 2010 and owned and operated by locals, Pet Adventure Shop stocks its shelves with a huge range of food and supplies. Unleash your inner basketball star at Mill Creek’s 3-on-3 Star Fest Basketball Tournament. “…The city hosts a very popular outdoor 3-on-3 basketball tournament for participants of all ages and abilities,” Travis shares. No city is complete without an annual summer festival and Mill Creek is no exception. “One weekend each July, the city hosts the Mill Creek Festival and it is quickly becoming a hot ticket item,” shares Travis. “There are several stages set up around the festival to host music, a community stage with family friendly acts and even a large pet plaza! If you want a fun summer event for your little one, look no further than the Summer Children’s Concerts at Library Park. Featuring four concerts over four weeks full of music, laughs, and entertainment for all ages, this event is sure to make for a memorable afternoon picnic for the whole family.

Working to build communities across the country, National Night Out is a campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, camaraderie among neighbors, and the development of safer, more caring communities overall. Block parties, cookouts, and other events are hosted throughout local neighborhoods and feature visits from emergency personnel, safety demonstrations, exhibits, and more. Mill Creek’s National Night Out is being held at Buffalo Park on August 7, so come out and show your support for local law enforcement and healthy neighborhood building at this event.

If golf is more your thing, you will want to check out the Mill Creek Country Club. “The Country Club is a private club that has a gem of a golf course that people love to play,” says Travis DeFries. Staying active in Mill Creek is easier than you might think. “Miles and miles of walking trails linking parks all over Mill Creek is one of my favorite features [of the city],” Jen shares. 60 different trails loop throughout Mill Creek, providing some of the most scenic walking, running, biking, and horseback riding opportunities around. If you’re looking for a spot for your kid’s next sports game, check out the Mill Creek Sports Park. “The Mill Creek Sports Park is located at the corner of Bothell-Everett Hwy. and Trillium Blvd. and is the location for a fantastic mixed-use sports field that is used by both soccer and baseball/softball,” shares Travis DeFries. “It is a turfed field, so a little bit of rain doesn’t cancel games, it has lights to be able to play up until 10 PM and it even has a snack shack and announcers booth!” With other amenities like a Tot Lot and picnic tables, the whole family can enjoy the great outdoors while cheering on the home team.

Another popular feature of the Mill Creek Sports Park comes recommended by both Travis and Tonya Tye. The Mill Creek Skate Park offers a wide range of bowls as well as an innovative street course that consists of several sections tied together, an 8-stair down rail, and much, much more. Whether your kid’s a beginner or a seasoned skating pro, he or she will find the perfect challenge at this local favorite spot.

“Mill Creek Little League has one of the largest and most successful Little League programs in the state,” shares Travis DeFries. “Every year they have over 800 boys and girls between the ages of 4-18 play baseball or softball. 9 years ago, the 12-year-old All-Stars ended up being the NW representatives at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. This year the 10-year-old and 11-year-old boys All-Stars teams both finished 2nd at the state tournament. This year, the 12-year-old girls softball All-Stars won the state tournament for the 2nd year in a row! The took 2nd place in the regional championship game to represent the West in the World Series. They lost a heartbreaker 1-0 in extra innings, but went down in history as the best softball team to ever come out of Mill Creek!”

According to Tonya, “there are some nice walking trails near the downtown area and around Village Green Drive.” One of these trails is the scenic North Creek Trail, which links the cities of Mill Creek, Bothell, and Everett. Filled with lush plant life, a serene duck pond, and other natural beauties, this trail provides the perfect opportunity for you to get your kids off the couch, active, and making meaningful connections with their local environment.

Sports lovers will have even more to enjoy in Mill Creek near the end of this year. “Just down from Mill Creek Sports is the new Arena Sports complex that is scheduled to open this Fall,” says Travis. “It is a 98,000 square foot facility that will include a full family entertainment center destined to be the go-to-destination for parties, special events, group activities and more. Activities include an indoor inflatable playground, bowling (both full-size lanes and mini five-pin lanes), multi-floor laser tag arena, rock climbing tower, two-story ropes course, 100 arcade games, on-site dining and two indoor soccer fields that can be used for recreational games and practices.” Check out all the info on Arena Sports now because once it’s open, your kids will never want to go anywhere else!
